Jayne, Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Jayne joined Balfour Beatty as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, after her A-levels. She is currently studying part-time towards a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at Salford University. The rest of the week, she leads the varied and interesting life of a Contractor’s Quantity Surveyor.

Jayne spends most of her time on site, handling everything from site measures and tender enquiries, to valuing subcontractors’ work, negotiating final accounts, payments and orders.

The scope of the projects she has been involved in is no less diverse. Already, Jayne has worked on the construction of a multi-storey car park, a shopping centre, student accommodation and primary school – all of which have broadened her perspective.

The advantage of studying on a ‘day release’ basis is that Jayne can put the theory she is learning at university into day-to-day practice. Not only that, Jayne has found that the practical experience she is gaining on the job also helps her with her studies.

Of course combining work with a degree presents many of its own challenges, but as Jayne points out, “The practical experience I will gain during the five years I will be studying towards a degree should prove invaluable to my future career prospects”.
