Mark joined Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering nine years ago, straight after graduating. He had been attracted by the company’s reputation for constructing some of the world’s most exciting projects, as well as its training scheme for progression to MICE.
After completing a major highways scheme in London, Mark transferred within the Group to Balfour Beatty Construction. Continuing to work in the capital, both as a site engineer and design engineer, Mark gained valuable experience on a wide range of projects, everything from major retail, commercial and hospital schemes to a refurbishment of the Houses of Parliament.
Mark’s interest in design led to him becoming a Design Manager and transferring to the West Midlands where he has handled a number of live projects and bids. Today, he is working on one of the biggest PFI Hospital Projects in the country – the Birmingham New Hospital Project – where he’s seconded to a JV company responsible for delivering a £521 million hospital development over the next five years.
Mark has got to where he is by making the most of the excellent training and support offered by Balfour Beatty, right from the initial courses for graduates to being given the professional opportunities to progress and become a Chartered Civil Engineer. He would encourage everyone else to do the same: “Take advantage of the training opportunities available and learn from those around you to develop your own skills.”
Of course it’s hard work and can be high pressure, but as Mark points out, the benefits are substantial: “Working for such a major player in UK Construction has allowed me to play an important role in some fascinating projects and to transfer between Group companies and regions easily to fit in with my ambitions and preferred location.”
