Paul, Commercial Manager

Twelve short years ago, Paul joined Balfour Beatty as a trainee graduate surveyor, working on small to medium-sized projects in the North West of England. After fronting commercial teams on several medium-sized projects, he took the unusual step of moving to the front end of the business, acquiring new skills in Bid Management and providing Commercial Management support to the Technical Services Director/Divisional Directors and their respective teams.

Today, Paul is Commercial Manager for Queen’s Park Hospital, a £100 million PFI Healthcare project. Among other things, he’s responsible for ensuring that Balfour Beatty adheres to its contractual obligations; protecting the JV’s interests; looking after risk identification and mitigation; managing procurement; ensuring that financial reporting procedures are set up correctly and then adhered to; monitoring the design team and supply chain performance, including the integration of key control measures whilst maximising margin and controlling cost.

No mean feat, and one that wouldn’t have been possible were it not for Balfour Beatty’s exceptional training programme (Paul has recently completed the company’s Management Development Programme) and the unstinting support of his colleagues.

Like them, Paul enjoys the constant challenges Balfour Beatty throws up (however daunting they might seem); the opportunity to continually learn new skills; individual and team success; and the ultimate satisfaction of delivering something back to the community, safely, on time and within budget. A level-headed type, Paul is always careful to maintain a healthy work-life balance: “Pursue your interests/hobbies and make the most of the quality time you spend with your family and friends”.
