With a total value of £100 million, the Sunderland BSF (Building Schools for the Future) project will revolutionise education in Sunderland by introducing cutting edge technology to classrooms and creating 21st century buildings. Including both new build and refurbishment works, this project will deliver three academies and three schools by 2010.

Four of the schemes in this project were handed over early to the client in the summer ready for pupils in September.

Washington School has also been awarded a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice for the modern yet environmentally friendly building delivered. Some of the features ir includes are rainwater recycling, solar power, a centrally controlled building management system, proximity infra red systems and potentially the largest green roof on a school in England. The green roof is planted with a hybrid mixture of Sedums suitable for local climatic conditions and will absorb CO2 and pollutants while releasing oxygen and water vapour into the atmosphere around the school.
