St Paul’s Church involved the creation of new community facilities within the existing church whilst maintaining an area for worship.

The part Grade II listed building was externally renovated with work to the brick, stonework, windows and the provision of new roof coverings. The fit-out aspect included a gymnasium, internet café, lecture theatre, art gallery and various community rooms.

The central feature is the Ark, a building within a building, with a four-storey steel frame that houses the community art gallery. It is built of tulipwood and supported on curving steel columns. It stands in a space away from the windows and the wood is so blonde that there is no loss of light or spaciousness even with the addition of this vast structure.

“Overall, we were very pleased with Balfour Beatty. We were very impressed with how Balfour Beatty Refurbishment entered into the spirit of the contract and we look forward to working with them again” Alex Sherratt, Matthew Lloyd Architects
